Lorem Ipsum Generator
Create placeholder text for layouts, mockups and tests: choose paragraphs, sentences or words and how many.
Runs in your browser. Your input is not sent anywhere.
What this tool does
Lorem ipsum is the placeholder text that designers and developers put into a layout before the real copy exists. It looks like ordinary prose, with words of different lengths, commas and full stops, but nobody reads it for its meaning, so the attention stays on the typography and the layout.
The tool builds new text from the vocabulary of the traditional passage every time you select “Generate”. You decide whether you get paragraphs, sentences or a fixed number of words, whether the text opens with the familiar “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”, and whether paragraphs come wrapped in HTML paragraph tags.
How to use it
- Choose the unit: paragraphs for body copy, sentences for short blocks such as card text, words for labels and headings.
- Enter how many you need: up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences or 10,000 words.
- Leave the option to start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” on if people should recognize the text as a placeholder at a glance.
- Turn on “Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags” to paste the result straight into HTML.
- Select “Generate”, then copy or download the result.
Changing the options does not change the current text; it is replaced only when you select “Generate” again.
How the text is generated
The vocabulary is the set of 63 distinct words of the common Lorem ipsum passage. A sentence has 6 to 14 words picked at random; sentences with 9 or more words get one comma after a word in the middle. The first letter is capitalized and a full stop ends the sentence. A paragraph has 4 to 7 sentences.
With the classic opening, the first sentence is always “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”, and in word mode the text starts with those eight words, without punctuation; word mode never adds commas or full stops. Everything after the opening is random, and no word follows itself.
The random choices use the cryptographically secure random number generator of your browser (crypto.getRandomValues), with rejection sampling so that every allowed word is equally likely. That is more than placeholder text needs, but it costs nothing, and repeated results are practically impossible except for very short text that consists only of the classic opening.
Worked example
With the unit set to sentences, the count set to 2 and the classic opening on, a result looks like this. Your second sentence will differ, because it is random.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Voluptate ea nostrud cillum, esse sunt aliqua tempor officia lorem. With paragraphs and the HTML option on, each paragraph is written as <p>…</p> and paragraphs are separated by an empty line, which keeps the source readable.
Reference: where Lorem ipsum comes from
The text is a scrambled extract of De finibus bonorum et malorum, a work on ethics by Cicero from 45 BC. In book 1, section 32, Cicero has the Epicurean Torquatus say that nobody loves pain for its own sake: “qui dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit”. The placeholder cuts “dolorem” in the middle, which is where “lorem” comes from, and then mixes the words so that the result has no meaning.
| Unit | Typical use | Suggested count |
|---|---|---|
| Paragraphs | Articles, page bodies, long descriptions | 2 to 5 |
| Sentences | Cards, teasers, list items, tooltips | 1 to 3 |
| Words | Headings, buttons, labels, table cells | 2 to 8 |
Common mistakes
- Publishing placeholder text. Search for “lorem” before a release; search engines index it and screen readers read it aloud.
- Designing only with Latin. The words are short. German compounds, long URLs and names in other scripts break layouts that Lorem ipsum never tests, so try real text of realistic length as well.
- Using a fixed length everywhere. Real content varies; generate a few lengths to see how a card or a heading behaves when the text is much shorter or longer.
- Testing accessibility with placeholder text. A screen reader reads the Latin words with the pronunciation of the page language, so tests with assistive technology need real text.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Lorem ipsum real Latin?
- It starts from real Latin by Cicero, but the words are cut and shuffled, so the placeholder text is not a meaningful Latin text. Latin readers recognize single words and nothing more.
- Why use placeholder text instead of real copy?
- Readable text draws attention to what it says. Placeholder text lets people judge the layout, the type and the spacing while the copy is still being written. Replace it with real copy as early as you can, because real text is the only reliable test of a layout.
- Can I use the generated text in commercial work?
- The source is more than two thousand years old, and the tool claims no rights in what it generates. Use it wherever you need placeholder text.
- Why does the result change every time?
- Every word after the optional classic opening is chosen at random. If you need the same text again, copy or download it; nothing is stored. Only the shortest results with the classic opening, one sentence or up to eight words, are always the same.
- Does the tool send anything to a server?
- No. The text is created in your browser. The page does not request anything when you generate text.
